Where is it?
Hidden in Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave National Park (USA) lies the world’s longest cave system—Mammoth Cave. This underground maze stretches over 676 kilometers, but scientists say there’s still more to discover!
Ancient Secrets of Indigenous People
5,000 years ago, Native Americans found the cave. They mined minerals, buried their dead, and left torch marks behind. The cave was forgotten until the late 1700s, when hunters chasing a bear rediscovered its entrance.
How complex is the maze?
1️⃣ Multiple levels: The cave has 5 stacked layers of tunnels. Paths split like tree roots, with dead ends, deep pits, and sudden underground rivers blocking the way.
2️⃣ Dark rivers and poison gas: Some areas have deadly carbon monoxide. Underground rivers run 10 meters deep—early explorers used rafts and torches!
3️⃣ Living fossils: The cave is home to blind fish, eyeless shrimp, and rare crickets that have never seen sunlight.
Who mapped the maze?
1️⃣ 19th-century enslaved explorer: Stephen Bishop, a Black guide, used ropes and candles to map 24 kilometers of tunnels. He found wonders like the “Bottomless Pit.”
2️⃣ Modern lasers: In 2020, 3D scans revealed new tunnels, but 600 kilometers remain unexplored by humans.
Why “Mammoth”?
The name comes from its giant size, not woolly mammoths (no mammoth fossils found here!). Its chambers could fit 1,500 soccer fields!

▶️ The Tragic Tale of Floyd Collins
In 1925, explorer Floyd Collins became trapped in a narrow tunnel while trying to find a new entrance. Rescuers worked for days to free him, but he died before they could reach him. His story made headlines and led to safer caving rules.
▶️ The “Crystal Lake” Discovery
In 1960, divers swam through icy underground rivers and found a hidden chamber filled with crystal-clear water. They named it “Crystal Lake,” proving the cave was even bigger than anyone thought.
▶️ Ghostly Voices?
In the 1800s, guides claimed to hear whispers in the cave’s “Gothic Avenue” tunnels. Later, scientists found it was just wind whistling through cracks—but visitors still joke about “cave ghosts”!
▶️ Paper Trail Mystery
In the 1940s, explorers dropped paper into a river to track its flow—the paper reappeared 32 kilometers away, revealing a secret water network!
▶️ Survival in Darkness
In 1972, a team got lost for 7 days. They licked water off rocks and followed bat droppings to find their way out. “Bats hate dead ends too,” one survivor said.
Can you visit?
✅ Some areas are open for tours—from easy 1-hour walks to 6-hour extreme climbs.
⚠️ But 99% of the cave is off-limits—it’s too easy to get lost, and GPS doesn’t work underground!

In 1983, explorers squeezed through a hole called “The Meat Grinder” to find new tunnels.
In 2017, a 13-year-old girl became the youngest to complete a dangerous 6-hour crawl tour!
