The Stone Forest is located southeast of Kunming City in Yunnan Province, China and is a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over hundreds of millions of years, rainwater and geological movements have shaped dense gray-black stone pillars here, resembling a forest of stones from afar. The pathways inside twist naturally into a maze-like structure.
The maze has narrow, winding paths. Many spots require visitors to turn sideways to pass. Stone peaks create forked paths, and some seemingly connected trails end abruptly at rock walls. Underground rivers flow beneath the rocks—visitors might hear water but cannot locate its source. Fossils of ancient sea creatures on the rock walls prove this area was once underwater.
Visitors can easily get lost, so guided tours are recommended. Local Sani guides know the routes well and lead tourists to hidden viewpoints like “Sword Peak Pond” and “Lotus Peak.” Wild ferns and moss grow in cracks, and lizards dart across damp areas. Safety signs mark loose rocks to avoid.
Deep in the maze, Sani cultural traces remain. Ancient Yi ethnic script is carved into stone walls, and some peaks have legends, like the “Ashima” rock formation. During rainy seasons, fog makes the Stone Forest feel mysterious, but wet paths require caution. Electronic guides are available for maps and geological facts.
The Stone Forest maze suits adventurous visitors. Wear non-slip shoes and bring water. On sunny days, sunlight forms grids of light and shadow between peaks—ideal for photos. Near exits, rest areas sell local snacks and handicrafts. The visit takes 2-3 hours, offering both natural wonders and insights into Earth’s geological changes.
