The Conwy Valley Maze is located in Conwy Valley, on the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia) in Wales, UK. It sits between the villages of Trefriw and Dolgarrog. Designed by garden designer Giovanni Jacovelli in 2005, it was originally meant to be the “largest garden maze in the world.” Though other mazes have since overtaken it in size, it’s still famous for its unique garden designs.
The maze covers over two acres, planted with British yew trees spaced one meter apart. The hedges now stand about 1.8 meters tall. The design includes themed areas like a tropical garden, butterfly garden, and Japanese zen garden. The rose garden has huge arches, and Italian-style elements can be seen everywhere. Japanese cedar trees along the sides are trimmed in the traditional “Niwaki” style, with branches shaped like floating clouds— a real highlight of the garden.
Australian artist Bob Haberfield, who created works for brands like Sainsbury’s and Lipton Tea, helped design the maze. He settled in Conwy Valley in his later years, and some of his unpublished paintings are now displayed in the maze area. Now Giovanni’s son, Enrico, helps run the maze— he hands out flyers and sells homemade baked pizzas to visitors.
The maze paths are both challenging and fun, usually taking visitors 30 to 60 minutes to navigate out. A viewing platform in the center lets you overlook the spiral layout and the beautiful valley scenery around. The visitor comment book has funny stories: someone once purposefully got their grandma lost for fun, and the son of a police officer who’s visited all mazes in the UK called this his favorite.
