AMAZEme Maze in New Zealand

AMAZEme Maze is located in Ngongotaha, Rotorua, on the North Island of New Zealand. It is an outdoor maze characterized by spiral hedges. It covers an area of approximately 2,000 square meters and is composed of 1,400 neatly trimmed escallonia hedge trees, forming a tortuous path with a total length of 1.4 kilometers. These hedges have been carefully trimmed into equidistant concentric circles, and when viewed from the air, they resemble geometric patterns drawn with compels.

The design of the maze is full of challenges: there are one-way doors and permanent obstacles along the paths. Tourists need to find the exits through observation and trial and error, which usually takes 30 minutes to 1 hour. If you give up halfway, you can evacuate quickly through the one-way door. There is no viewing platform in the center of the maze, but the spiral structure itself forms a unique spatial experience. Visitors need to rely on their sense of direction and patience to complete the exploration.

The maze is operated by the local Jensen family and has been centered around “traditional family fun” since its opening in 2010. The park is rich in supporting facilities: McGregor’s garden grows seasonal fruits and vegetables for tourists to pick and taste. The small animal breeding area allows for close contact with domestic animals such as rabbits and chickens. The seasonally open butterfly houses showcase the local insect ecology. In addition, giant board games (such as Snake ladder chess, four-sided chess) and retro outdoor games (sack race, tug-of-war) offer additional entertainment options for families.

The maze is open all year round. It operates normally on weekends and holidays during summer (10:00-17:00) and winter (10:00-16:00). The ticket price is 20 New Zealand dollars for adults, 15 New Zealand dollars for children, and 60 New Zealand dollars for a family package (2 adults + 2 children). Tourists can bring picnic gear and rest under the shade of trees. It is worth mentioning that the maze allows for drone aerial photography to capture the stunning full view of the spiral hedges from the air.
