Hidden away in Shanyang Pastoral of Jinshan District, Shanghai, is the first outdoor plant maze in the whole district. Just hearing its name is enough to get you excited.
When you walk up to the maze entrance, all you see is green—everywhere. This maze covers an area of 1,500 square meters, and it’s totally made with viburnum trees (they’re like the “walls” here). These trees grow into 2-meter-tall hedges. Stand inside, and the branches and leaves around you frame little patches of the sky. When the wind blows, the leaves sway gently. You don’t even have to start finding your way yet—you’re already hooked by all this green.
The path under your feet is made of plastic cement, and it feels super soft and cozy to step on. The pavement is blue and yellow, which looks really distinct if you look down from above. This winding path hides between the hedges, and its total length is 1,000 meters. Some people are fast—they find the exit in less than a minute, like natural maze pros. Others like to take their time, wandering around the paths, and it takes them five or six minutes to get out. But they don’t rush at all.
This place isn’t just for walking through a maze. The staff set up treasure hunts—hiding little items by the grass along the path. Sometimes you can even play chase games. The sound of footsteps and laughter echoes between the hedges—it’s so lively.
When you’re not in a hurry, just take it slow. The viburnum leaves are thick and lush green. Sunlight filters through the gaps, casting little spots of light on the ground. Take a deep breath, and all you smell is the fresh scent of plants. When you get tired, stop by the side of the path, look at the greenery around you, and your heart feels so light and bright.
This maze is tucked inside Shanyang Pastoral, which covers 400 mu (about 26.7 hectares). After playing here, you can go feed cute animals or walk through the rice fields nearby. But even just this green maze alone is worth a special trip. Whether you want to race to find the exit or play games with friends, you’ll have a great time here. When you walk out, even the ends of your hair will carry the smell of fresh grass.
