The land on which the maze is built was once used to impound bullock teams traveling between Burra and Port Wakefield in the 1800s. Today, it stands as a testament to the Morris family’s creativity and dedication.
As you step into the maze, you’ll find yourself surrounded by towering hedges, with twists, turns, and dead ends at every corner. The sound of fountains adds to the enchanting atmosphere, while the intricate layout is sure to test the navigation skills of even the most experienced explorers. And if you need a break from the challenge, there are giant – sized games made from local Mintaro slate to enjoy.
One of the most remarkable things about the Mintaro Maze is its water – wise design. Since 2000, the maze has relied solely on rainfall for water, making it an environmentally friendly attraction. The trees have adapted to the natural conditions, and the maze remains lush and vibrant throughout the year.
After successfully navigating the maze, be sure to visit the on – site gift shop. Here, you’ll find a wide range of quirky gifts, puzzles, and games, as well as locally made aromatherapy products from the adjacent natural therapy clinic. You can also relax and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea while taking in the beautiful surroundings.
The Mintaro Maze also hosts a variety of events throughout the year. At Easter, there’s a fun – filled bunny hunt with free giveaways. In May, during the Clare gourmet weekend, there’s the haggis hunt. And on the Sunday of the October long weekend, the Fairies, Elves and Pixie Picnic takes place. Additionally, the maze is available for private functions such as weddings and birthdays.
The maze is open on Saturdays, Sundays, and during SA school holidays, but it is closed in February for annual maintenance. The admission fee is $20 for adults and $10 for children.
