Labyrint Drielandenpunt sits near Venlo in southeastern Netherlands, right at the “Three-Country Point” where Holland, Belgium, and Germany meet. Built in 2008 to celebrate the region’s unique cross-border culture, this maze was designed to reflect the triangular shape of the three-country border—its paths form a giant geometric triangle when viewed from above, with smaller hexagons and circles nested inside.
The maze uses 1.7-meter-tall hedges of boxwood and yew, trimmed into sharp, angular walls that create a grid of winding paths. First-timers often get a bit turned around at the many T-junctions and hidden dead-ends, taking 30–60 minutes to find the center. That metal viewing platform in the middle? It’s shaped like a three-pointed star, honoring the three nations sharing this corner of Europe. From up there, you can clearly see the maze’s symmetrical layout—like a green puzzle piece fitting into the forested landscape.
Local lore says the maze was inspired by an old 17th-century border map, where cartographers drew twisting lines to mark unclear national boundaries. Today, the hedges include rare Dutch, Belgian, and German plant species—like Dutch heather, Belgian wild ferns, and German elderberry—making it a living symbol of regional unity. Kids love spotting small metal markers along the paths, etched with symbols from each country’s flag.
Facilities stay simple: an info booth with maps (look for the tri-colored logo!), picnic benches under oak trees, and that vending machine for quick snacks. The real highlight after the maze? Follow the yellow trail to the actual three-country border stone, where you can stand with one foot in each country—a perfect photo spot!
