The Marlborough Maze is vast in scale, covering nearly 2 acres and meticulously crafted from 3,000 yew trees. It was opened to the public in 1991 and has since attracted countless tourists to come and challenge it. Entering the maze, the total length of the winding and tortuous passages amounts to 2 miles, as if there is no end. The height of the hedges is just right, creating a mysterious atmosphere without making people feel depressed. Every October, six gardeners spend a week carefully pruning these sequoia hedges with hedge trimmers to maintain the unique shape of the maze.

This maze is exquisitely designed and incorporates many elements related to history. Its inspiration comes from the victory statue of Greenling Gibbons on the rooftop of the main building. The passage is composed of patterns such as cannons firing shells, fluttering flags and loud trumpets, in memory of the first Duke of Marlborough. In the Battle of Blenheim in 1704, the Duke led his army to defeat the combined forces of France and Bavaria. Furthermore, the “V” -shaped hedge design in the maze seems to pay tribute to Churchill, who was born here. When you walk to the center of the maze, you will find the words “Blenheim” formed by low hedges.

Under normal circumstances, it takes tourists about 25 to 40 minutes to walk through the maze. If you really get lost inside, don’t worry. There are two tall wooden Bridges in the maze. Climbing up the Bridges, you can overlook the layout of the maze and help you find your way out. After the tour, you can also head to the Pizza Cafe in the Walled Garden to taste freshly baked pizza and have a cup of coffee to replenish your energy. The Marlborough Maze combines fun and historical and cultural connotations. When visiting the Blenheim Palace, you mustn’t miss it.
