Mayfield Garden Maze in Australia

Mayfield Garden Maze is located in Oberon, New South Wales, Australia, about a 2.5-hour drive from Sydney. This maze is the core attraction of the Hawkins Family Garden. It is composed of a 1.4-kilometer-long boxwood hedge (box hedge) and reaches a height of 1.8 meters. It is the second largest hedge maze in Australia. Viewed from the air, the maze presents symmetrical geometric patterns, with a wooden observation tower at the center. After reaching the top, visitors can ring the bell to overlook the entire hedge.

The path design of the maze is full of challenges. Some sections require passing sideways, and dead ends and one-way doors alternate. During our exploration, we went back to the starting point many times. Eventually, we found the exit only by relying on the brick patterns on the ground, which took about 40 minutes. The park has thoughtfully set up an “emergency exit”, allowing for a quick evacuation if you give up halfway. There is a notice board beside the maze, offering route suggestions of three levels of difficulty, suitable for visitors of different age groups.

The Mayfield Garden where the maze is located covers an area of 65 hectares. It was started to be built by investment banker Garrick Hawkins in 1984 and integrates the design essence of European gardens. Apart from the maze, the park also features an 80-meter-long cascading waterfall, a Chinese-style pavilion, a rose garden and other scenic spots. We strolled along the gravel path, passing by a mirror-like artificial lake where water lilies were in full bloom and the outline of the Blue Mountains in the distance was faintly visible. There are barrier-free passages in the garden to facilitate the passage of wheelchairs and baby strollers.

In terms of dining, Mayfield Cafe at the entrance offers freshly baked pizzas and handcrafted coffee. However, the choices are limited. It is recommended to bring your own picnic ingredients. When we were having lunch under the shade of a tree, we saw many families playing with their pet dogs on the lawn. It is worth mentioning that pets are allowed in the garden (on leashes), a detail that is deeply loved by tourists.

It is recommended to visit the Blue Mountains National Park nearby. The drive takes about one hour. You can experience hiking at Three Sisters or take the aerial cable car of Scenic World. If you have enough time, you can also visit The town of Oberon on the way and taste the local specialty Pizza at The Cave Pizza Bar.

Mayfield Garden is open all year round (except Christmas). The regular day ticket costs 38 Australian dollars for adults and is free for children. It is recommended to avoid the peak hours on weekends and choose to go in the morning of a weekday. This way, you can enjoy a peaceful visiting environment and also avoid queuing. We visited in late autumn. The maple leaves in the garden were all red, and the boxwood in the maze was also tinged with golden green, presenting a unique scene. Whether it’s parent-child interaction or photography creation, this place can offer an immersive natural experience.
