The Horta Maze Garden is located in the Horta-Guinardo district in the north of Barcelona, covering an area of 9.1 hectares. It is the oldest garden in Barcelona and an unparalleled example of artistic gardening. The garden has served as the filming location for several movies, including “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”.
Historical background
It was designed and constructed by the Italian architect Domenico Bagutti on commission from the Marquis of Desvalls (Joan Antoni Desvalls d ‘Ardena) in 1791.
In the middle of the 19th century, the family invited architect Elies Rogent to expand the Romantical-style garden.
It was acquired by the Barcelona municipal government in 1967, restored and opened to the public in 1971.
It was certified as a Spanish Cultural Heritage (Be Cultural d ‘Interes Nacional) in 1994.
Garden structure
Core Maze area : Made up of a 750-meter-long cypress fence 2.5 meters high, with many dead ends and hidden shortcuts.
Jardi Neoclassic : includes the Temple de Danaide, Escultura de Dafne and artificial canals.
Jardi Romantic : features waterfalls, Falsa Ruina, a medieval castle ruin, and Gothic pavilions.
Water System : Eight reservoirs and 176-meter-long irrigation canals are designed from the 18th century.

Free audio guides in six languages including Chinese and English are provided (ID cards are required).

Catalan/Spanish history lectures are available every Friday from 10:00 to 12:00 (included in the ticket).
