The Celtic Maze is a remarkable creation that combines history, art, and nature. It was planted in 1996 by Peter Lamb, a friend of Tim and Darina. Peter had long dreamed of creating a Celtic Maze, inspired by the intricate and abstract patterns found in Ireland’s Golden Age manuscripts, such as the Book of Kells and Durrow. However, he didn’t have enough space for his grand design. Fortunately, Darina, who had also been thinking about planting a maze since 1992, adopted his scheme. She then consulted Lesley Beck, a professional maze designer, who modified Peter’s original plan to create a practical hedge maze with an engaging puzzle and a relatively short exit.
Covering just under an acre, the Celtic Maze was planted with yew trees over a period of ten days. Every section had to be meticulously measured to ensure that each yew tree was precisely in place, maintaining the integrity of the puzzle. It took several years for the maze to reach maturity. In some areas where the yew trees did not grow well, sections were replanted with hornbeam and beech trees.
Celtic mazes are straight – line spiral patterns that have been around since prehistoric times. They originated in early Celtic stone and metal work and later appeared in medieval insular art. The patterns in the Celtic Maze are not only visually stunning but also hold deep cultural and historical significance.
