The Longleat Hedge Maze in England is one of Europe ‘s most famous plant mazes and is recognized as one of the oldest hedge mazes in England, dating back to the mid-16th century. It was not originally intended to be confusing but as a walkable path to protect privacy and make better use of garden space . Over time, the maze became more and more complex, eventually evolving into the current hedge maze form .

The maze is located in Longleat Manor in Wiltshire, UK. It was designed by Greg Bright and officially opened to the public in 1975. It is one of the world’s first maze cases combining three-dimensional space design and has attracted tourists from all over the world with its unique design and challenge.

The maze is composed of approximately 16,000 English yew trees and covers an area of about 0.6 hectares (about 60.7 mu). The outer contour of the maze is rectangular, and the interior is filled with meandering curved paths.

The total length of the maze route is 2.72 kilometers, and it is known as one of the “longest garden mazes in the world”. People wander inside, only seeing the winding path before their eyes, and their view is completely blocked by the thick hedges on both sides. Within a few minutes, they will lose the ability to distinguish east from west and can only passively choose their direction at each fork in the road. Fortunately, the Longleat Maze is different from traditional two-dimensional mazes. It has six wooden high Bridges inside. Lost tourists can choose to climb the Bridges to overlook the entire maze and locate the observation tower in the center. This is also the reason why the Longleat Maze is a three-dimensional maze.

Visitors take an average of 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to find the exit, with the fastest record being 25 minutes, and some fail to reach the destination. If you get Lost in the maze, don ‘t worry. You can look for the “Life in Lost” distress sign set up in the maze. Visitors can hold up the sign to ask the staff for help.Whether one can successfully challenge the maze or not, experiencing the process of exploration is the most important thing! Welcome everyone to explore the Longleat Maze!
