The maze in Liuyang Guandu Snail Town is in the center of the town. This is the origin of the myth “The Snail Girl”. Local elders often say that a young man once saved a snail, and later the snail turned into a girl to repay his kindness.
The maze is snail-shaped, covering about 12 mu. It looks like a big snail overall, with spiral paths winding around the center of V-shaped small pond. Bamboo and low shrubs are used as partitions. The bamboo grows 1.5 meters high, and the shrubs are pruned neatly. The ground is paved with gravel, making it stable to walk on.
The maze paths are designed according to the snail’s spiral pattern. There are many forks，but there are regular directions. Every 50 meters, there is a wooden sign indicating the direction. There is a circular platform in the center, with a snail sculpture and bamboo chairs. You can sit and rest when tired.
The town’s snail food is distinctive. The dining area is near the maze. You can eat snail pot, stuffed snails, snail soup. The snails are all from local rice fields. After being cleaned, they are fried with chili and perilla, tasting fresh. There are also snacks made of snail shells, such as rice cakes in shells.
There are many surrounding amusement facilities. In addition to the previous rice field slides and fish-touching ponds, there are water floating, straw mazes, and handcraft workshops. In the handcraft workshop, you can learn to weave snail-shaped bamboo utensils, which children like. You can catch small snails in the fish-touching pond and take them home to raise.
You can drive here. It takes about 1 hour from Liuyang urban area, and the parking lot is free. You can also take the shuttle bus from Liuyang to Guandu, then walk 10 minutes after getting off.
The maze opens with the town from 9:00 to 17:30. The all-in-one ticket is 50 yuan, including the maze and all amusement facilities. Children under 1.2 meters are free.
It is suitable to visit in spring and autumn, with mild weather. In summer, it is recommended to come in the morning or evening to avoid the sun. It is good to wear sports shoes. You have to walk a lot in the maze, and the gravel ground is a bit bumpy.
