The Schonbrunn Palace Maze is located within the Schonbrunn Palace Gardens in Vienna, Austria. It is one of the classic designs of Baroque gardens. It was originally built between 1698 and 1740 as an entertainment venue for the Habsburg royal family. Later, it was reduced due to expansion in the 19th century and was finally restored in 1998 based on a historical model. The maze covers an area of approximately 2,000 square meters and is composed of neatly trimmed tall hedges. The paths are mainly regular straight lines without complex dead ends, making it suitable for tourists to explore easily.

At the center of the maze is a raised viewing platform. After arriving, tourists can climb up to the high platform to overlook the entire hedge layout and observe the walking routes of other tourists, adding interactive fun. The park also features zodiac signs and interesting ICONS, guiding visitors to discover hidden surprises during their exploration. This design not only retains the symmetrical aesthetics of Baroque gardens but also incorporates elements of leisure and entertainment, making it one of the most popular attractions in Schonbrunn Palace gardens.

The history of the maze is closely related to the expansion of Schonbrunn Palace. In 1743, when Empress Maria Theresa ordered the expansion of Schonbrunn Palace, the landscape designer incorporated the maze into the overall planning, making it a place for socializing and entertainment for the royal family members. Although the renovation in the 19th century reduced the scale of the maze, the restored maze still retains the original geometric structure and classical charm, allowing visitors to experience the leisure style of European nobles 300 years ago.

Nowadays, the maze is open to the public as part of Schonbrunn Palace Gardens without the need for separate tickets. After visiting the palace, tourists can stroll into this “green maze” to experience the beauty of order in the Baroque garden. Whether it’s parent-child interaction or solo exploration, the maze, with its simple yet ingenious design, offers visitors a fascinating historical experience
