In 107 AD, Roman Empire soldiers first dug salt here. Back then, salt was as precious as gold. Miners used hammers and chisels to carve out salt blocks, shipped across Europe. By the Middle Ages, the mine reached 120 meters deep, with tunnels spreading like spiderwebs.

Today, Turda Salt Mine has three main levels, as complex as an ant colony:
Mine Elevator to the Depths: Ride an old iron-cage elevator for 5 minutes to 42 meters underground—the air tastes salty.
Salt Lake & “Mushroom Forest”: A glowing green lake lies at the deepest level. Row a boat through salt pillars, with stalactite-like salt crystals hanging overhead.
Maze-Like Tunnels: Over 40 kilometers of pathways wind through the mine. Some spots are so narrow you must squeeze sideways. (You could lick the salt walls—but better not!)
The most amazing spot is the Rudolf Mine, a football-field-sized cavern with an underground Ferris wheel. Riding it lets you see a 13-meter-tall “salt waterfall.”
From Mine to Playground: A Sci-Fi Underground World
Designers turned industrial ruins into something spectacular:

Play mini-golf in the Joseph Mine, where the course is covered in salt grains. Shoot hoops in a basketball court 120 meters underground—the balls get dusty with salt!
